1984 Fender JAPAN Esprit! $1499.99 In 1983 Fender introduced its Master Series. Designed by Dan Smith, the Esprit and its sister guitar, the Flame were envisioned to be alternatives to Gibson. Built with the player in mind, these guitars would offer features and electronics not normally available on Fenders. Fender decided to build the guitars in Japan at the highly regarded Fujigenn Gakki factory. Fujigenn also made guitars for Ibanez and other builders and really was the premier manufacturer of instruments in Japan. Super quality and attention to detail. The line soldiered on until 86 when Robben Ford became an endorser for the Esprit and the guitars were then called a Robben Ford Signature. This is a great example of the original Japanese Esprits. Super quality and materials. The body is chambered and made of alder. Some folks report the tops are carved spruce, others carved maple. I would guess craved spruce thanks to its warm tone. The 24.75 inch scale 3 piece maple neck features a bound rosewood fingerboard with dot inlays. Dual Schaller made special design humbuckers dish out a variety of tones. 1983 Fender American Standard Stratocaster! SOLD! As many guitar aficionados know, the early 80s were a transitional time for Fender. Coming out of the CBS era, there was a new spirit of innovation as well as a back to basics attitude. Fender went from the big headstock, bullet truss rod guitars into the sleeker "Smith" Strats of the early 80s. A few years in the future was the modern American Standard. In between the Smith Strat and the modern American Standards came the 1983 revised Standard Strats. These came with a pickguard mounted jack and trem springs under the guard. Here's an interesting example of this guitar that has been modified to look more like a traditional Strat. The body was routed to accommodate a traditional jack and the electronics have been hot rodded. The guitar now has a set of great sounding Lace Sensor Gold pickups and newer electronics. The body is alder for great tone. The 25.5 inch scale maple neck features a maple fingerboard with 21 frets.
