1973 Gibson Les Paul Recording! SOLD! Lots of guys talk about Les Paul tone but you wanna know what real Les Paul tone is? The Les Paul Recording! They actually sound like Les Paul himself! No muddy woman tone here (although you could dial it in), just big Hi-Fi sounds. Les always spoke highly of the Recording as well as the similar LP Personal model. They got closest to the sound in his head. The LP Recording may get close to your sound too thanks to an array of switches and controls that would make a Space Shuttle pilot sweat. Bass and treble knobs, a preset 3 way tone color switch, the mysterious and subtle decade knob, as well as a phase switch. There's a Hi/Lo impedance switch that allows you to plug directly into a mixer without a direct box or into a conventional amp. The trick is the low impedance pickups. As Les would always tell you, the low impedance pickups were superior to high impedance units and allowed greater frequency response, dynamic range and lower noise. In layman's terms, they had more highs and lows, you could use longer cords and they had greater detail. Maybe Les was onto something. Funny aside: rumour has it that these pickups were made by the folks that would become EMG. All of those bullseye painted, EMG equipped, Zakk Wylde Les Pauls now have a weird connection to the Recording. Check out some crazy period demo recording of the guitar by clicking here. Lots of sounds! Of course even with all of the gadgets, it wouldn't be a Les Paul without a big old mahogany body. Les wanted sustain just like all of those whipper snappers plugging into Marshall stacks wailing pentatonics and shaking their long hair. The 3 piece mahogany neck features a bound rosewood fingerboard with block inlays. Dig on the crazy half fret at the end of the neck. Les must have zipped right up there for How High the Moon or Vaya Con Dios or something. A Stopbar tailpiece (with factory goofhiders, it was the 70s afterall), Harmonica Tuneomatic and Grover tuners keep it rock solid. The finish is oh-so-70s natural walnut lacquer. It will make you want to redecorate your living room in Earth tones to match. The overall vibe is a little country, a little rock n roll I guess with some pipe smoking jazz thrown in. What a cool guitar! SOLD!

1983 Gibson Les Paul Pre Historic Burst Reissue! SOLD! The 1958-1960 sunburst Les Paul is considered by many to be the pinnacle of tone and craftsmanship. After several attempts at creating a 58-60 style Lester like the Kalamazoo, Heritage 80, Standard 82's, Leo's, Jimmy Wallace and Guitar Trader editions, Gibson finally released an official reissue in 1983. These guitars were immediately loved by fans of the original Bursts as they were much closer versions of the classic 50s Les Paul than contemporary Standards. Thin binding in the cutaway, ABR bridges, inked on serial numbers, nickel plated hardware, and nice flame tops distinguished them from their counterparts in the regular line. These were top of the line Les Pauls and were priced a good bit higher than a regular Standard. Precursors to the modern Historic reissues, these guitars are well loved by many fans as great guitars. Quality materials and top notch workmanship distinguish these instruments. The non weight relived body is one piece mahogany for incredible sustain. The book matched flame maple top features some gorgeous figure. The one piece mahogany neck features a bound rosewood fingerboard with trapezoid fingerboard inlays. 1973 Gibson Les Paul Custom 54 Reissue Limited Edition! SOLD! The 54 Les Paul Custom has long been one of my favorites. Here's one of Gibson's earliest efforts at reviving the 50s Les Paul formula. Made in very limited numbers, the 54 reissue Custom stayed true to the original Black Beauty's recipe. The old story was that these were made from leftover 50s bodies but that has been thoroughly debunked by now. Either way, these reissues were made closer to the originals in many ways. The body is a single piece of mahogany with a carved mahogany top just like the originals. The newer reissues feature a laminated on top but not these 72 reissues. The body and top are all carved from one hunk of wood just like in the 50s. The all mahogany construction lends a mellower voice as well. 2009 Gibson Les Paul 50th Anniversary 59 reissue Limited Edition! SOLD! Here's a very limited edition version of Gibson's 59 Les Paul! Gibson initially offered a run of 500 50th anniversary 59 reissues in the standard sunbursts. After these sold out, they did an additional run of R9's in Burgundy Burst, Amber Orange Burst and Rust Burst. Limited to 59 pieces each, these guitars featured finishes that made many vintage nuts take notice. Gorgeous recreations of some of the varied burst shades you would see in books like Beauty of the Burst. Many folks considered these limited run guitars to be the best looking R9s in years. The new 59 reissues have a few nice updates to make them even more accurate. Incredible quality and attention to detail. The non weight relived body is one piece mahogany for incredible sustain. The book matched flame maple top features the authentic 50’s contour. This example has some very realistic figuring. Cool 3D flame with hints of curl throughout and a nice “peek-a-boo” effect where the flame hides or changes depending on the angle. The one piece mahogany neck features a bound rosewood fingerboard (nice and dark) with correct shape trapezoid fingerboard inlays. Holly headstock veneer. Zebra coil Burstbucker 1 and 2 pickups deliver killer PAF tone. CTS pots and bumblebee caps. 1992 Gibson Les Paul Studio Lite M-III! SOLD! Here's something you don't see every day: a Les Paul with an H/S/H pickup arrangement! The Studio Lite was Gibson's attempt at making a modern Les Paul. Some cool features. The body is made of mahogany with Chromyte inserts for lighter weight. The top is maple for that classic Lester bite. The 24.75 inch scale mahogany neck features a rosewood fingerboard with trapezoid inlays. The electronics are where the fun is. A hot 500T bridge pickup teams with a 496R neck pickup and an NSX mid position single coil. A 5 way switch along with a 2 position switch gives you 5 single coil sounds and 4 humbucker tones. One of the positions on the 5 way is actually an off position in humbucker mode which fooled me for a second. I assumed that there was a wiring issue but after reading up on these, it turns out Gibson actually wired one setting as an off position. Wacky! A Stopbar tailpiece, Tuneomatic bridge and sealed tuners keep it rock solid. The finish is a transparent brown with a black back and is contrasted by black hardware. A really cool Les Paul that does a ton of different styles! SOLD!
1986 Gibson Les Paul Pre Historic Burst Reissue! Patent number humbucker pickups deliver killer PAF tone. Stopbar Tailpiece, ABR-1 Tuneomatic bridge and tulip button Kluson style tuners keep it rock solid. 1974 Gibson Les Paul 20th Anniversary Custom! SOLD! In 1974 Gibson celebrated the 20th anniversary of the Les Paul Custom. At the 15th fret, an engraved 20th anniversary inlay commemorates these special guitars. Sources vary on how many were made. I've heard as few as 60 were built in Ebony or White. White is definitely the color to have. The ULTIMATE finish for a Les Paul Custom according to many! Creamy, aged white. Just like Steve Jones, Randy Rhodes, Lindsay Buckingham and several other famous Custom players. A white Les Paul Custom is about as cool as it gets! Many authorities also state that 1974 was the first year for white Les Paul Customs (excluding SG/LP's of course). How much cooler can it get? 20th Anniversary model in first year white. It really doesn't get much better than that! All of the other specs are typical of Les Pauls of the period. Mahogany body with a maple top. Three piece mahogany neck with a bound ebony fingerboard and pearl block inlays. Pearl split diamond headstock inlay and multiple binding. Gold hardware. The pickups are the original Patent Number Stamp humbuckers (click on highlighted words for pics). Very, very early examples of these pickups. Original 17th week of 1973 pots and clean solder joints. Kluson Super Waffleback tuners, Stopbar tailpiece and Tuneomatic bridge keep it rock solid. The tuners were replaced at one point and reinstalled. The holes for the replacement tuners were filled. It wears a black switch tip and the original cracked white one is included. The finish has aged to a gorgeous creamy color and the bindings have yellowed nicely. An incredible guitar for a player or collector. SOLD!

The body is weight relived but doesn't have the bigger chambers of the new Standards. The 24.75 inch scale mahogany neck features a bound rosewood fingerboard with pearloid trapezoid inlays. The bridge pickup is a 57 Classic Plus while the neck is a standard 57 Classic. This combo has a great Classic Rock tone that's close to a traditional PAF.
