The guitar business can be a wacky thing. I haven’t had a Gibson Chet Atkins in years, then all of a sudden, I get TWO in the same month! Wacky! If you missed my last Tenny, here’s another chance! The Gibson Chet Atkins Tennessean offers players much of the feel and tone of the Country Gentleman model at a lower price. Designed with Chet’s input, this guitar is a fingerpicker’s delight. It will also appeal to anyone looking for a quality guitar that can cover many different genres. Rock, blues, jazz, this guitar would be an excellent choice. The single cutaway, semi hollow body is made of laminated maple. It also features a Chromyte center block for added sustain and resistance to feedback. The 25.5 inch scale maple neck features a rosewood fingerboard with offset dot inlays. 1.75 inch width nut for comfortable fingerpicking. 490T and 492R (a special humbucker just for the Chet series) Alnico magnet humbuckers deliver smooth, warm tone.  A Stopbar tailpiece, Tuneomatic bridge and Kluson style tuners keep it rock solid. Other cool features include a factory arm rest and vintage style pickguard. The guitar is finished in cherry red lacquer which reminds me of the original late 50s Gretsch 6119 Tennesseans. A great guitar and a wonderful tribute to one of the best guitar players out there.

This Tennessean plays well and has a comfortable neck. The wider nut makes fingerpicking easier. The pickups and electronics sound good and deliver a smooth, warm tone not unlike Chet’s later recordings. Everything works as it should. This is a nice used guitar. It shows moderate playwear. The finish shows average to moderate pick, clearcoat and belt scratches. There’s some checking and normal Gibson-style clearcoat wear. Fine for a player. Comes in an original hardshell case.

After Chet’s death, his family moved back to Gretsch and all of the Gibson models were discontinued. Unfortunate really as the Gibson models offered a nice, well rounded alternative to the more retro Gretsch guitars. A wonderful guitar for a variety of music and a great addition to any collection.
