Let’s hop on the time machine and head back to the 80’s! Lots of manufacturers were making some great shredders in Japan at this time. Charvel, Ibanez, Jackson, and Kramer were flooding the market with top quality Super Strats. This Charvel Model 5 is a great example of a top of the line Japanese Super Strat. Neck through body for killer sustain. My guess would be that the neck is maple with basswood wings as that’s a common construction for these guitars. It also equates to a guitar with a nice punchy tone and crisp highs. The rosewood fingerboard is on the flatter side and the frets are wide for good bending. Dual Jackson made active humbuckers deliver powerful tones. A Floyd Rose licensed trem and sealed tuners dish out rock solid performance. This example is finished in a striking dark blue metallic and set off by black hardware. A great quality guitar that will be great for many players!
Like most shredders of this era, this Charvel has a slim neck with a flat fingerboard and big frets. Good overall feel. The active pickups deliver good tone and los of versatility. Condition wise, this one is for the player, not the collector. It’s seen some gigging time and has the belt buckle scratches plus dents and dings to prove it. The front shows moderate pick and clearcoat scratches. Still not bad looking at all and fine for a player. Comes in a badly graffiti decorated hardshell case with a bum latch.
I remember when these guitars were all the rage and also remember when they fell out of favour. Many players are rediscovering this era thanks to the great playability and tone of these guitars. Japanese quality is well known these days and many players would prefer an 80s Japanese built Charvel to a USA Fender or Gibson. There’s not much else you can buy new at this price quite like this.
